DVM PARTNERS WITH DA, DOH FOR TRAINING ON RABIES SPECIMEN PROCESSING
The Department of Veterinary Medicine of BASC, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 3 (DA-RFO3) and Department of Health – Central Luzon Center for Health Development (DOH-CLCHD) conducted the “Training on Proper Decapitation of Suspected Rabid Animals, and Packing, Storage, and Transportation of Samples.” This training, held on July 31, 2024 at the DVM building, aimed to enable veterinarians, livestock technicians, and other agricultural extension workers in Bulacan to be capacitated on the processes, and ultimately help in decreasing the cases of animal and human rabies in the province.
The first talk was on the updates on animal rabies status in the Philippines, presented by Dr. Milagros Mananggit, Chief of the Integrated Laboratory Division of DA-RFO3. Updates on human rabies was presented by the chief nurse from the Rural Health Unit of San Ildefonso, Bulacan, as representative from DOH-CLCHD. Dr. Honeylet Nicolas gave a short talk on BASC-DVM’s initiatives on rabies and zoonoses, and called for collaboration with the LGUs. The afternoon session focused on the discussion and actual hands-on training on identification and proper decapitation of suspected rabid animals, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and proper storage and transport of specimen, discussed by Dr. Patricia Mae Lacanilao and facilitated by other veterinarians and personnel from DA-RFO3.
